FAB Winter Meeting & 2018 Bike Summit

Join Falls Area Bicyclists and RASDak for a huge kickoff to bicycling in 2018!

Come early to visit with advocacy groups, bike vendors, and representatives from regional rides and organizations. The earlier you arrive the better chance you'll have to win prizes! Stay late and enjoy live music and social time with your fellow riders.

5:00pm - 6:30pm - Visit with local bike shops, advocacy groups, and regional ride events in our Bike Expo.

6:00pm - 6:30pm - FAB Annual Meeting - FAB members are encouraged to attend this portion of the evening to install new board members, answer member questions, and conduct other business.

6:30pm - Get Ready for 2018! - Get Connected with FAB & the RASDak Route Announcement - Falls Area Bicyclists will share highlights from 2017 and hint at exciting things for 2018. RASDak will follow with their route announcement. Be the first to know!

7:30pm - Live Music and Social

About Falls Area Bicyclists - The mission of Falls Area Bicyclists is to promote bicycling in all of its forms and skill levels including transportation, recreation, fitness, sport, and social interaction. FAB is supported by our members, we encourage you become active in your local bicycle organization.

About RASDak (Ride Across South Dakota) - The annual cycling adventure that spans the beautiful state of South Dakota! RASDak is a non-profit organization, all proceeds for our annual ride are returned to the communities we visit to improve cycling and promote bicycle tourism. Come ride with us in 2018!

Elmwood Forest CX

It's cyclocross season!On Sunday, October 22nd, come out for a fun afternoon of racing and bikes at Elmwood Park. Bring the kids for the kids races! 

Wanna give CX a try? Have some fun with the "Run What You Brung Expo!"

All races just $10 when you register on-line. ($15 day of the race).
Kids race is free to all kids 9 and under.

Racing starts at 12:00pm.
12:00 - Combined Beginners (Cat 4/5) 30 minute race
1:00 - "Kids Race" (Ages 0-9) 1-2 laps
1:45 - Combined Juniors (Ages 10-17) 20 minute race
2:30 - Combined Cat 1/2/3/4 45 minute race
Then we'll tear down the barriers and hit the main event!

FAB August & September News


The summer isn't over yet. There are so many great opportunities to get out and ride with old and new friends. We hope to ride with you soon!


We are pleased to announce the list of board nominations for 2018. The following will be officially elected at our Fall Meeting and will begin their term in January.

Nominated for President, Michael Christensen. Michael has been a long time advocate for bicycling at both the local and state level to improve bicycling laws and increase bicycle safety and education. As a League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor, Michael has spent countless hours training many cyclists to become comfortable and safe on our streets and highways.

Nominated for Vice President, Jodi Erickson. Many of you may know Jodi as one of the main organizers of RASDAK (Ride Across South Dakota). Jodi's skill in bicycle event planning and her infectious joy for riding has resulted in many new people becoming regular bicyclists.

Nominated for Secretary, Kerrie Vilhauer. As the Ambassador for the Liv bicycle brand through Spoke-n-Sport, Kerrie has been very active in getting women and children involved in bicycling. She has led several women specific rides including overnight bikepacking adventures.

Nominated for Communication Director, Art Holden. Art has been serving out the term vacated by Dona Schallenkamp. With this nomination, he will begin a fresh term of his own.

Sunday, August 20

Come for a fun Sunday evening urban ride through the streets of Sioux Falls! We'll ride to a local pizza joint, then ride on in search of pie and dessert. We'll finish with a final stop for refreshments.

This is a no drop ride with experienced bicyclists riding at both the beginning and end of the group. Pace will be moderate at about 10-12mph. Total distance approx 15 miles and will be ridden on low volume residential and collector streets. Learn more:

Sunday, August 13

Come along on our monthly Sundae Funday family ice cream ride! Sunday evenings are a very pleasant time for a family ride on low traffic streets and the trail system in Sioux Falls.

We'll leave Prairie West Branch Library at 6:30pm and ride to Stensland Family Farms Ice Cream using the city's bike routes, mostly residential streets and trail. This is an 8 mile round trip ride. Learn more:

Sunday, September 10

The FAB water stop is returning to help our runner friends in the Sioux Falls Marathon / Half Marathon! We could really use some volunteer help. Can you give us a couple of hours Sunday morning September 10th? It's a fun time with great people. You could even ride your bike to the water stop! More details:


FAB has been asked for volunteers to help with the South Dakota Senior Games time trials,  5K   10K  and  20K . Racers start every 30 seconds. The event is on Friday morning September 8th at Minnehaha County Park on the south shore of Wall Lake. Check in and warm ups start at 8AM. Could you help out? FAB May/June Newsletter

Summer is upon us and there's no shortage of reasons to enjoy being outside. We hope you'll join us on some FAB rides and don't forget, Tour Sioux Falls is coming.

123 Youth Skills and Ice Cream Ride

Hey kids! Grab your bikes, friends, and parents, and come to a free and fun bicycle skills and safety event hosted by Falls Area Bicyclists and SD EMS for Children.

Bring your helmet if you have one or SD EMS will have helmets for you can keep if you need one. Certified bicycling instructors will give a short discussion and there will be a fun obstacle course set up to test your skills.

We'll practice what we've learned with a fun family ride to B&G Milkyway. Ice cream treats compliments of FAB. Meet at Explorer Elementary School at noon on May 27th.

Tour Sioux Falls Coming June 24th

Tour Sioux Falls is only a month away. Be sure to get registered for the biggest family cycling event of the season. Ride with the family to rest stations set up around our wonderful trail or add some extra road miles with our annual FABRAD ride. FAB members receive a discount when registering.

Tour Sioux Falls will start and end at Cherry Rock Park.

FAB Overnight with RASDAK

Come ride with FAB and head out to meet RASDAK as they roll from Salem into Sioux Falls. We'll leave Sioux Falls Friday June 9th (Departure time and location TBA) and ride about 50 miles to Salem. We'll spend the evening enjoying the RASDAK festivities and camp with the group. The next morning, we ride back to Sioux Falls with the entire tour. It's sure to be a party!

It's only $40.00 to register for a single day of RASDAK, so this is a great opportunity to try out bicycle touring. Your registration covers camping and a day of riding with RASDAK.

Bike to Work Week - May 15 through May 19, 2017

Choose a healthy, safe, and amazing way to work by riding your bike! Join the hundreds of people in Sioux Falls who have already discovered the joy that is commuting to work by bicycle. It's a great way to start your day energized and ready for anything!

Falls Area Bicyclists are excited to bring you 2017 Bike to Work Week! We've partnered with our local bike stores, several local businesses, and the League of American Bicyclists to give you chances to win prizes, freebies and discounts for riding to local cafes and coffee shops, and a chance to take home the Bike to Work Trophy for your employer.

Pledge to Ride and Register for Prizes!

Starting in May, stop by any of our three bike shops and register your commitment to ride to work at least once during the event and get entered in drawings for gift cards and prizes! For extra chances to win, be sure to register at all three shops; Spoke-n-Sport, Two Wheeler Dealer, and Harlan's Bike and Tour.

Ride for Your Employer 

Join the National Bike Challenge and start recording all your rides in May. Join your company's Strava club to earn points for your employer. (If your company does not have a Strava Club set up, click here for instructions). The winning workplace with the most points recorded by May 19th at the Wrap-Up Party will take home the Traveling Trophy!

Stop at an Energizer Station and get Rewarded! 

We've lined up several Energizer Stations this year where you can score a free cup of coffee, enjoy a discounted treat, and even save on an after work refreshment. Unless noted below, all the Energizer Station's promotions are available during normal business hours for each establishment.

Bagel Boy, Ride in anytime during the week and get a free fountain drink or coffee with any purchase.

Coffea Roasterie - Available all week and all three Coffea locations, get free coffee when you stop by on your bicycle.

Co-Op Natural Foods - Stop by on your bicycle and the Co-op will reward you with your choice of two items. Choose from coffee, tea, cookie or fruit!

Flyboy Donuts - Free glazed donut with any purchase for those who ride by Flyboy on thier way to work.

First Lutheran Church - Bike Thru Prayer - 6:30am-8:30am, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Stop for a prayer and pick up some breakfast snacks and coffee on your way to work.

Half Baked - On Friday, bicyclists receive a free mini-cupcake and Italian soda when you visit with your bike.

Harlan's Bike & Tour - Donuts and Coffee - Harlan's is providing a free breakfast on Tuesday May 16th from 7:00am to 10:00am. Be sure to ride by and thank them for their support of bicycling!

Koch Hazard Architects - Koch Hazard will be providing extra incentive to visit the Co-Op Energizer station with a free granola bar (while supplies last) and on Thursday & Friday morning score a free baked good at Queen City Bakery!

Queen City Bakery - Pedal by Queen City any day, except Tuesday, and you'll receive your choice of coffee drink free!

Scooter Coffee (85th and Minnesota Ave location only) - Ride by Scooters and receive a free drip coffee on your way to work.

Spoke-n-Sport - Friday Breakfast Bash - On Friday May 19th, Celebrate National Bike to Work Day with crepes and breakfast treats from Spoke-n-Sport. Stop by on your bike between 7:00am and 10:00am and enjoy a free breakfast!

Two Wheeler Dealer - Mid-Week Grill Party - Mark the half-way point with a free hump day lunch courtesy of Two Wheeler Dealer. TWD will grilling burgers and brats between Noon and 1:30pm Wednesday May 17th.

WoodGrain Brewing Co. - Tuesday through Friday during Bike to Work Week be sure to ride over to Woodgrain after work for $1.00 off taps!

Get Social & Encourage Friends

Post your ride to social media and encourage your friends and co-workers to join you. We'll be randomly rewarding riders who post pictures of their bike at work or at one of our Energizer Stations! Also, look for a fun photo contest from the Facebook group, Sioux Falls Bicycle Photos.

Join a Group Ride!

Monday - May 15th at 8:00pm - Moon & Starz Ride - Meet at Two Wheeler Dealer for a little trail and singletrack in the moonlight. Stay for refreshments provided by TWD at Starz.

Tuesday - May 16th at 7:00pm - Spoke-n-Sport Brat Ride - Meet at SNS and then head to Leaders Park for some singletrack excitement. Return to SNS and we'll grill up some brats and share our adventures.

Wednesday - May 17th at 7:00pm - Ride of Silence - Meet at Fawick Park (Statue of David). We'll slowly and silently roll through downtown in remembrance of our fellow cyclists who have been injured or killed on the streets of Sioux Falls and around the world.

Thursday - May 18th at 6:00pm - Sioux Falls Taco Ride - Meet at Frank Olson Park on the east side of Sioux Falls. This rolling party wanders low volume urban streets on its search for a hot taco joint. Upwards of 100 cyclists attend, don't miss out.

Wrap-Up Party - Friday May 19th!

Come to WoodGrain Brewing Company any time after 5:00pm on Friday May 19th and celebrate with your fellow bike commuters. We'll do prize drawings and award the Bike to Work Traveling Trophy!

30 Days of Biking

April 1st kicks off the 30 Days of Biking Challenge. FAB challenges you to make the pledge to ride your bike every day in April. It doesn't matter where or how far you ride, just get out there every day. Join the community of joyful bicyclists here:

Bike Friendly Businesses

Sioux Falls currently has four bike friendly businesses. FAB would love to help your employer become the 5th! Our volunteers are available to consult with local businesses to help them become certified with the League of American Bicyclists. If you believe your employer should become bike friendly, contact, we're happy to help.

Walk Run Ride Challenge for Center of Hope

Support the great work Center of Hope provides Sioux Falls through their bicycle ministry by taking the Walk Run Ride Challenge. Record your rides (or runs and walks) this summer and compete for prizes.
